UNC-Asheville standout the latest to join Tobs

Wilson, NC — Kevin Weidenbacher, currently the leading hitter at UNC-Asheville, has signed on to play with the Wilson Tobs for the upcoming 2008 season. Weidenbacher, a junior infielder, is playing in his first season with UNC-Asheville after transferring from Calhoun Community College, where he spent his first two collegiate seasons.

In his first 30 games with the UNCA Bulldogs, Weidenbacher is leading the team with an impressive .375 batting average, and is also tops on the squad with a .441 on base percentage. A complete offensive player, Kevin has scored 28 runs, while cracking 10 doubles, 3 triples, 2 dingers, and driving in nineteen. He trails just one teammate with a .547 slugging percentage.

"The consistency Kevin brings to the yard every day is the main reason for his successes this season," said UNC-Asheville head baseball coach Willie Stewart. "His work ethic is second to none, and he can be a center point on any team."

Weidenbacher, a graduate of Archbishop Rummel High School and a native of Mertairie, LA, has always attributed his achievements to the help of his coaching staff.

"For me, good hitting is always a result of the work my coaching staff puts in with me," he stated. "I am just excited to get a chance to play every day. The Coastal Plain League is one of the best in the country."

While Kevin has displayed the ability to reach base in nearly half of his plate appearances this season, his coach says it's his instincts, not his speed, on the base paths that make him so dangerous.

"Kevin hits either first or second in our order every game," Stewart said. "He's not overwhelming in terms of speed, but he's a very smart base runner. Since I saw him playing at Calhoun, I knew he was our guy."

The Tobs' season begins on Wednesday, May 28, when they travel to Wilmington to take on the Sharks at 7:05 PM. Wilson will host its home opener on Friday, May 30 against the Florence RedWolves, with first pitch also scheduled for 7:05 PM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member franchise of the Coastal Plain League. With fourteen teams in the Carolinas and Virginia, the league attracts top players from collegiate programs throughout the country. The Tobs play all of their home games at Historic Fleming Stadium.
