Sanders announced as newest member of Tobs

April 2, 2008

Wilson, NC — The newest name on the Wilson Tobs' roster for 2008 is that of Matt Sanders, a junior infielder from Clemson University. Sanders, a two year veteran of the Coastal Plain League, has the ability to play second base, short stop, and third base. The New Bern, NC native spent the 2006 and 2007 summer seasons wit his hometown River Rats, but has signed on with the Tobs for his final CPL season.

"I'm just looking forward to this summer," Sanders said. "I have always loved Fleming Stadium and how they run things. It is a symbol of how baseball is supposed to be."

Sanders is currently in his first season as a Clemson University Tiger. He spent his freshman and sophomore collegiate seasons at Young Harris (GA) College. During his freshman season, he was a junior college all-state selection, hitting an impressive .438 with 11 doubles and 4 homers. His successes continued into his sophomore year, when he was named an all-conference player. As a senior at New Bern High School, Sanders was named the Sun Journal Player of the Year.

"I don't have many personal expectations for this season," he said. "Just trying to help my team win the Petitt Cup is all I can ask of myself right now."

Through his first 14 games at Clemson, Sanders is hitting a solid .308 in 26 at bats, with 1 double and 3 runs batted in. He has committed just one error in 24 fielding chances. Clemson head coach Jack Leggett emphasized the importance of Sanders' ability to play multiple infield positions.

"Matt has the ability to play third base, short stop, and second base," Leggett stated. "He has some versatility and is very athletic. He works hard and is an unselfish ball player."

The Tobs' season begins on Wednesday, May 28, when they travel to Wilmington to take on the Sharks at 7:05 PM. Wilson will host its home opener on Friday, May 30 against the Florence RedWolves, with first pitch also scheduled for 7:05 PM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member franchise of the Coastal Plain League. With fourteen teams in the Carolinas and Virginia, the league attracts top players from collegiate programs throughout the country. The Tobs play all of their home games at Historic Fleming Stadium.
