Tobs tap hitting guru Conrad for 2008 assistant

February 11, 2008

Wilson, NC — Cory Conrad has coached hitters from coast to coast and at every level, and success has followed him. Now he brings his considerable offensive skills to the Tobs coaching staff.

The Tobs have announced the hiring of Conrad, who will serve as Jeff Steele's lone assistant for the 2008 season.

Conrad's most notable success came with Reds USA baseball, a youth baseball organization based in Encinitas, CA for which he served as director of player development for a decade. During his tenure, the Reds won 10 national championships and produced three current major leaguers, pitchers Cole Hamels (Phillies) and Matt Chico (Nationals), as well as third baseman Hank Blalock (Rangers).

While with the Reds, Conrad also served as hitting instructor for his alma mater, Palomar College. Under his instruction, the Comets won three consecutive Pacific Coast Conference titles from 1998-2000. His 1999 squad hit for an impressive combined average of .370 with a team total of 60 home runs.

More recently, Conrad has worked as hitting instructor for the professional Traverse City (Michigan) Beach Bums of the Frontier League. He also has experience with collegiate summer baseball, having worked for the San Diego Waves of the Western Wood Bat League for the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to work with some of the top collegiate players in the nation," said Conrad. "Wilson has a great tradition with baseball, and I'm just glad to be a part of that."

Currently Conrad works as the roving hitting instructor for The Bullpen, a youth baseball organization operating out of Farmington Hills, Michigan. He currently lives in Brighton, MI with his wife Rachel and their two children, Madison and Jack.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our players to learn form a great hitting coach," said Tobs Head Coach Jeff Steele. "Cory has a strong history of winning, and I am excited about what he brings to the table."

Conrad succeeds Wes Davis, who will take over the head coaching duties for the Florence RedWolves in 2008.

The Wilson Tobs are a member franchise of the Coastal Plain League. With fourteen teams in the Carolinas and Virginia, the league attracts top players from collegiate programs throughout the country, playing all home games at Historic Fleming Stadium.
