Tobs sign dual threat MantoothJanuary 8, 2008 Wilson, NC — The Tobs got a boost both on the mound and at the plate with their most recent signing, Ryne Mantooth from Austin Peay University. If his dual-capabilities weren't enough to cement his value to a summer team like the Tobs, Mantooth is also left-handed, adding another quality southpaw arm to the pitching staff. The Owensboro, Kentucky native, who is entering his Junior season at Austin Peay in the spring of 2008, was a key part of a 40 win Governors team in 2007. He compiled an 8-4 record with a 3.91 ERA in 14 starts as part of Austin Peay's three-man starting staff. He was third on the team with 92 innings pitched, compiling 52 strikeouts and tossing a complete game. He also got a taste of pitching under pressure, earning the start in Austin Peay's final game of the season, a loss to then top-ranked Vanderbilt in the Nashville regional of the NCAA tournament on June 3rd, 2007. "We expect Ryne to fill an important role in our starting rotation this summer," said Tobs head coach Jeff Steele. "A sinker-baller with a lot of experience can be very successful against wood bats and that is what Ryne is going to bring to the table." In addition to his mound-work, Mantooth also excelled as a designated hitter and 1st baseman for the Governors. In 76 at-bats over 31 games, Mantooth hit .289 with four doubles and drove in nine runs. The Wilson Tobs are a member franchise of the Coastal Plain League. With fourteen teams in the Carolinas and Virginia, the league attracts top players from collegiate programs throughout the country. Playing home games at Historic Fleming Stadium. Contact: |
