Wilson, NC — Wilson welcomes Seward County Community College hitting coach Chris Rowland for 2010 summer.

Rowland enters his fourth year as an assistant baseball coach at Seward County Community College in 2009-2010. In Rowland’s first two seasons, Seward County won the Jayhawk West Conference championship with a combined 49-15 conference record. Rowland coached four NJCAA All-Americans in his first two seasons and one player who was selected in the MLB Draft (Tanner Rindels – Detroit Tigers). Also in his first two seasons with the Saints, Rowland coached 15 All-Conference selections, six All-Region 6 selections, three NJCAA Region 6 Gold Glove Award winners, two Jayhawk West Conference Most Valuable Players, and the Jayhawk West Conference Freshman of the Year (Christian Kowalchuk) in 2007.

Rowland spent the 2007 and 2008 summers coaching in the semi-pro M.I.N.K. League with the Beatrice Bruins. In 2008, Rowland helped lead Beatrice to a League Championship and to a 3rd place finish at the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series in Wichita, Kan. Beatrice finished with a 33-9 overall record. In 2007, Rowland coached the Bruins to a 9th place finish.

Rowland is originally from Wilburton, Okla., and played in his hometown while attending Eastern Oklahoma State College from 2000-2002. In Rowland’s freshman season at Eastern Oklahoma State, he helped lead them to the NJCAA World Series, where they finished in 5th place. Rowland graduated with an Associates degree from Eastern Oklahoma State in 2002. He played his two final seasons in college at East Central University in Ada, Okla. Rowland and the Tigers won the NCAA Lonestar North Conference championship his senior season and made a semifinal appearance at the Lonestar Conference Tournament. Rowland graduated from East Central University with a Bachelor’s degree in 2004 and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education/Sports Administration in 2005.

In addition, the National Strength and Conditioning Certification Commission certified Rowland as a strength and conditioning specialist. Rowland is also an active member in the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is also a certified Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting and a member of USA Weightlifting.

“I’m really excited to have Chris joining my staff this summer,” said head coach Jeff Steele. “Chris has a great knowledge of the game and his experience will be a huge asset towards the development of our players. He comes very highly recommended and is an extremely hard-working individual – he will be a great fit in Wilson and in what we are trying to accomplish.”

Rowland’s coaching experience also includes four years as a high school hitting instructor in Oklahoma City and Ada, Okla. Rowland is also an adjunct instructor at SCCC and his wife, Alana, is the Seward County Volleyball Assistant Coach.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its thirteenth season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
